Bobby Rydell, '60s teen idol and 'Bye Bye Birdie' star, dies
Bobby Rydell, a pompadoured heartthrob of early rock ‘n roll who was a star of radio, television and the movie musical “Bye Bye Birdie,” died Tuesday.
Rydell died of complications from pneumonia at a hospital in a suburb of his hometown of Philadelphia, according to a statement posted by his marketing and event coordinator Maria Novey.
Rydell, who credited a 2012 kidney and liver transplant with extending his life, was 79.
Along with James Darren, Fabian and Frankie Avalon, Rydell was among a wave of wholesome teen idols who emerged after Elvis Presley and before the rise of the Beatles.
Between 1959 and 1964, he had nearly three dozen Top 40 singles including “Wild One,” “Volare,” “Wildwood Days,” “The Cha-Cha-Cha” and “Forget Him,” a song of consolation for a bereft girl that helped inspire the Beatles’ classic “She Loves You.”

The Story of Bobby Rydell
If you’re a baby boomer, you’ll remember Bobby Rydell. This teen idol heartthrob – and what a cutie he was – exploded on the scene in the 1960s with hits like Kissin’ Time, Wild One, and my personal favorite, Volare.
Rydell appeared on Dick Clark’s American Bandstand in 1959, and went on to sell more than 25 million records during his career.
Now 74 years old, Rydell has written an honest and compelling autobiography: TEEN IDOL ON THE ROCKS: A Tale of Second Chances. I was privileged to receive a review copy and gave the book a read over the weekend.
Baby boomers will enjoy Rydell’s memories of his childhood in South Philly back in the day when no one locked their door and the best places to meet girls was at the local ice cream parlor.

Bobby Rydell's standing in rock n roll history isn't too good. He came from Philadelphia, the center of rock's corruption, and recorded there for Cameo- Parkway, a label with a dubious reputation (see Jim Dawson's book "The Twist", 1995). He had his greatest hits during 1959-62, which is generally seen as a lean period in American pop music ("the era of the Bobbys"). Authentic rock n roll as a hit-making force was pushed aside by featherweight teen pop and dance crazes. Nevertheless, in my opinion Rydell deserves more credit than he usually gets. He was probably the most musically talented of the late '50s Philadelphia school of clean-cut teen idols.
