What a great and encouraging story:
The story of David and Svea Flood, missionaries to the Belgian Congo, is little-known today. But what follows is a remarkable story of faith . . . and restoration.
The Floods left their native Sweden with a two-year-old son, set out for the interior of Africa, and together with another young Scandinavian couple, the Ericksons, sought Gods direction for their endeavors. Rebuffed by the chief who would not let them enter the village for fear of alienating the local gods, the two couples opted to go half a mile up the slope and build their own mud huts.
They prayed for a spiritual breakthrough, but the only contact with the villagers was a young boy, who was allowed to sell chickens and eggs twice a week to them. Svea Flood decided if this was the only African she could talk to, she would try to lead the boy to Jesus—and she did. But there were no other converts.
Malaria struck the members • I hope this story of God's faithfulness through the sacrifice of missionary couple David and Svea Flood will inspire you. • Back in a missionary couple named David and Svea Flood went with their 2 year old son to what was then called the Belgian Congo. They met up with another young Scandinavian couple and set out from the main mission station to take the gospel to a remote area. At the village of N’dolera they were rebuffed by the chief, who would not let them enter his town for fear of alienating the local gods. The 2 couples opted to go half a mile up the slope and build their own mud huts. They prayed for a spiritual breakthrough, but there was none. The only contact with the villagers was a young boy, who was allowed to sell them chickens and eggs twice a week. Svea Flood- a tiny woman only four feet, eight inches tall - decided that if this was the only African she could talk to, she would try to lead the boy to the Lord. In fact she succeeded. But there were no other encouragements. Meanwhile, malaria continued to strike one member of the little band after another. I
I've been thinking of it in context of a big book I'm writing on the problem of evil and suffering. How many times has God had a purpose in events that seemed senseless at the time they happened? How many things that seem pointless now will later be seen to have a gudomlig point?
Consider Joseph and his brothers who horribly betrayed him and sold him as a slave: "You intended it for evil, but God intended it for good" (Genesis ).
Hope you enjoy this story. Randy
