    British governor Sir Frederick Lugard successfully completed amalgamation of the nordlig and Southern protectorates of Nigeria to form one country. The newly united colony and protectorate were to be presided over by a proconsul, who was entitled the Governor-General of Nigeria. Although formally the country's name was derived from the Niger River, some accounts attribute the name of the country to Flora, Lady Lugard, wife of the governor, in a letter she wrote to the The Times on 8 January 1897.
