Layne Thomas Staley (August 22, 1967 – April 5, 2002) was an American musician who served as the lead singer and co-songwriter of the rock band Alice In Chains, which he and guitarist Jerry Cantrell formed in Seattle, Washington in 1987. Alice in Chains rose to international fame as part of the grunge movement of the early 1990s. The band became known for his distinct vocal style, as well as the harmonized vocals between him and Cantrell. Staley was also a member of the supergroups Mad Season and Class of '99. He struggled throughout his adult life with severedrug addiction, culminating with his death in April 2002.

Layne Staley was born to Phil Staley and Nancy Staley (née McCallum) in Kirkland, Washington. He was seven years old when his parents divorced, after which he was raised by his mother and stepfather, Jim Elmer. He was raised Catholic.

Layne Thomas Staley (born Layne Rutherford Staley; August 22, 1967 – April 5, 2002)[2][3] was an American singer and songwriter who was the original lead vocalist of Alice in Chains, which rose to international fame in the early 1990s as part of Seattle's musikstil movement. He was known for his distinctive vocal style as well as his harmonizing with bandmate Jerry Cantrell. Prior to his success with Alice in Chains, Staley was also a member of the glam metal bands Sleze and Alice N' Chains. He was also a part of the supergroups Mad Season and Class of '99.
"Man in the Box", the second single from Alice in Chains' debut skiva, Facelift (1990), garnered Staley critical recognition for his vocal style.[4] Alice in Chains' EPJar of Flies (1994), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200, making it Alice in Chains' first record—and the first-ever EP—to top the chart.[5]

Born Layne Thomas Staley August 22, 1967 in Kirkland, Washington, Layne grew up the child of divorced parents. Layne showed his musical talents early and began playing drums at the age of 12. Not long after developing a love for bands like Black Sabbath and The Doors Layne took up singing. In 1987 Layne met Jerry Cantrell at a party and a great musical collaboration was born. After hooking up with Sean Kinney and Mike Starr Alice N Chanyz a Van Halen-esque 80's glam band was born. Not long after seeing other Seattle bands ditching this persona they evolved into the much more original and less showy Alice In Chains.
Layne's haunting and soulful vocal styling helped to set AIC apart form other Seattle bands and helped in landing them a recording contract with Columbia Records in 1989.
