Allan W. Anderson was a distinguished Professor of Philosophy at San Diego State University from 1962 until his retirement in 1985. Full of curses, evil spirits, nature spirits, and witch familiars, it is a dreadful and powerful realm from which people need constant protection. This chapter discusses this world of spirits and their pervasiveness, where there are disembodied spirits (both good and evil ones), which have mysterious and unknown forms, in contrast to the "embodied" ancestors discussed in the last chapter, who are always recognisable. There is also the frequent troublemaking of the nocturnal witch familiar, the tokoloshe. Well versed in Greek, Hebrew, Latin, Sanskrit, German, French and Chinese, Allan Anderson was a gifted religious linguist. Upon graduation with a double degree from Columbia University and Union Theological Seminary, he was recruited by San Diego State University as an Associate Professor in the Philosophy Department to teach Asian Studies. In 1967, Dr. Anderson was instrumental in founding the newly formed Religious Studies Department. He received an Excellence in Teaching Award from the State of California in 1970.
