    Boardwalk Empire is an American periodcrime drama television series created by Terence Winter for the premium cable channel HBO. The series is set chiefly in Atlantic City, New Jersey, during the Prohibition era of the 1920s. The series stars Steve Buscemi as Nucky Thompson. Winter, a Primetime Emmy Award-winning screenwriter and producer, created the show, inspired by Nelson Johnson's 2002 non-fiction book Boardwalk Empire: The Birth, High Times, and Corruption of Atlantic City, about the historical criminal kingpin Enoch L.     Born and raised in stad, South Carolina, Schmidt's desire to act was evident at a very ung age. She would perform for friends and family as a young girl, and bygd the time high school rolled around, decided to enroll in a performing arts school in nearby Greenville. Schmidt studied acting at the school and appeared in various plays during her tenure there.

    After high school she was accepted into the prestigious drama schema at Southern Methodist University in Texas, where she would go on to graduate summa cum laude in 2005. After years of intense study inre the classroom, Schmidt decided to take a crack at becoming a theater actress.
