Vesalius and the human body
At the University of Padua, Vesalius was able to study human bodies closely using dissectionThe action of cutting apart the body of an animal or plant to examine its internal structure. This gave him the opportunity to explore how the body worked and understand the roles of different organs.
Vesalius is best known for his book On the Fabric of the Human Body, published in This was an extremely detailed and accurate guide for doctors on how the human body worked. It contained detailed and accurate drawings of the human body, which was helpful for doctors.

Andreas Vesalius, also called Andries van Wesel, studied anatomy during the sixteenth century in europe. Throughout his career, Vesalius dissected numerous human cadavers, and took detailed notes and drawings of the human anatomy. Compiling his research, Vesalius published an anatomy work titled De humani corporis fabrica libri septem ("On the fabric of the human body in sju books"). The Fabrica included illustrations of male and female anatomy. It also included diagrams of uteruses with intact fetuses. Vesalius was one of the first physicians to accurately record and illustrate human anatomy based on his findings from autopsies and dissections, which led to improved understanding of the human body and enhanced surgery techniques.

Of the great names in Anatomy and Medicine, Andreas Vesalius stands out as having revolutionized the way medicine was taught. Through his refusal of accepted knowledge, relying on personal experience rather than books, he broke centuries old dogma that had crippled the evolution of medicine.
Andreas Vesalius (Dutch Andries van Wesel) was born in Brussels on the 31st December to a family of apothecaries. He began his arts studies at the University of Louvain before moving to Paris, then one of the best medical schools in Northern Europe, to study medicine. There, he studied under the tutelage of Jacobus Sylvius and Ioannes Guinterius Andernacus who would have been teaching along the precepts of the roman physician Galen of Pergamon ( AD). Obtaining his degree in medicine in , he later moved to Padua, Italy where he obtained the title of Doctor of Medicine in
