    The Teahouse of the August Moon

    After reading The Teahouse of the August Moon (both book and play) and watching the film adaptation, I’m undecided as to whether the story is brilliant satire or badly aged racism with a sprinkle of sexism. Let’s say somewhere in between.

    In post-war Japan, an American GI is assigned to a small village and told to Americanize the place. Things begin to go south not long after he arrives and is presented with two geishas (one in the play and movie), whom he thinks are hookers. This is the first in a long ling of subtle but entertaining cultural misunderstandings. The natives, unwilling to go by the military’s recommended playbook, set off to build their own version of democracy, which centers on a teahouse for the geishas.

    Really, The Teahouse of the August Moon feels a bit more like something related to the Vietnam War, given its sharp commentaries on military fallacy and incompetence. The story is funny and light on its feet, e

    He was born John Patrick Goggin in Louisville, Kentucky. His parents soon abandoned him, and he spent a delinquent youth in foster homes and boarding schools. At age 19, he secured a job as an announcer at KPO Radio in San Francisco, California, marrying Mildred Legaye in He wrote over 1, scripts for the Cecil and Sally radio program (originally titled The Funniest Things), broadcast between and The show's sole actors were Patrick and Helen Troy. In , Patrick wrote adaptations for NBC's Streamlined Shakespeare series, guest-starring Helen Hayes.

    Produced on a tight budget, his first play, Hell Freezes Over, directed by Joshua Logan, had a brief run on Broadway in However, the credit opened the door for him as a Hollywood scriptwriter.

    Jack spent a good time of his 20 year career fighting crime in Brooklyn North. He was assigned to the 90 Pct., Street Crime enhet, Brooklyn North Narcotics, and the 83 Pct. Squad. He retired in while assigned to the 94 Pct. Squad.

    Jack made arrests in his year career, most of them for felonies. He joined the Department in and served the Citywide Street brott Unit and the Narcotics Division, earning promotion to detective in He worked in Detective Squads in the 88th, 83rd and 94th precincts, was widely admired for his skill, experience, and instincts.

    Jack was a Brooklyn guy through and through. He certainly could have filled the role a Hollywood director would be looking for when casting a tough-guy NYPD detective.
