    Deborah Anne DyerOBE (born 3 August ), known mononymously by the stage name Skin and often erroneously as the name of her band Skunk Anansie, is a British singer, musician and songwriter. She is the lead vocalist of Skunk Anansie, who are often grouped as part of the Britrock movement in the UK, and has gained attention for her powerful, wide-ranging soprano voice and striking look.

    In , Skin joined the judging panel of the Italian version of the talent show The X Factor for one season, and in she was on the cover of the UK lesbian magazine Diva. After releasing new music and touring with Skunk Anansie, in Skin was featured as one of the cover stars of Classic Rock magazine's special "She Rocks" issue and was honoured with the Inspirational Artist Award at the Music Week Awards ahead of celebrating 25 years of Skunk Anansie.     I’ve been seeing a fair bit of Deborah Dyer in the papers recently and it got me to thinking about her incredibly powerful persona and exciting career. Still relevant; still badass and still not suffering fools, Dyer (A.K.A Skin of Skunk Anansie fame) still deserves kudos for her enduring legacy and unapologetic brand of ‘clit-rock’.

    We have Skunk Anansie’s Summer tour to thank for the influx of articles and interviews in which the impact and influence of the band’s musical output is re-celebrated and poured over, and in true bandwagon style I have decided to add to it. Prepare to be influxed.

    Skin was born in and brought up in Brixton, South London. Her childhood was spent surrounded by music. Her grandfather ran his own drinking establishment and Skin witnessed the revelry and kamratskap that people enjoy when drinking lokal and having a dance to Prince Buster. With childhood dreams of becoming a pianist, Skin was keen to pursue a career in music.

    British alternative quartet Skunk Anansie played what their lead singer, Skin, called clit-rock – an amalgam of heavy metal and Black feminist rage. Skin began singing in high school for a classmate's band after considering the offer for over a year. Six years after that band broke up, the members of Skunk Anansie (including bass player Cass, guitarist Ace, and drummer Robbie France, who was replaced by Mark Richardson in ) met one another by chance. Their name was taken from the West African folktales of Anansi the Spider-Man, with a slight change of spelling and "Skunk" added to make the name nastier.
    The group played its first gig at London's Splash club in March , subsequently taking six weeks to record its debut album, Paranoid and Sunburnt, at a "haunted house" outside the city.
