PARODY AND METAPOETRY IN TWO
POEMS BY GLORIA FUERTES

Like many of her contemporaries, the Spanish poet Gloria Fuertes (19171998) explores metapoetic
themes such as the essence of poetic language, the purpose of poetry and the role of the poet and the
reader in her work. This article considers metapoetry and the closely related concept of parody in two
of her poems, El vendedor de papeles o el poeta sin suerte, first published in 1954, and Maletilla,
from Poeta de guardia (1968). Both poems reveal her experience of being sidelined by literary critics,
which she responds to by including deliberately non-poetic language in her work, thus emphasizing
her aim of reaching ordinary people and her rejection of litist writing. On the basis of these two

Poetry in Primary Education is the basis for the development of the general linguistic capacity of children. With poetry, our students can improve their levels of oral and written communication and increase personal creativity. We can introduce poetry in education in different ways and we can work as well with a huge variety of types of tasks. From reading to listening or even elaborating our own productions. This one fryst vatten entitled Paisajes para que los pintes and was chosen once more for simplicity of structure, but also because it immediately sparked ideas in my mind.
Each ‘estrofa’ decribes a very simple image with the basic structure

En medio (in the middle)
In the first couple of estrofas this is made explicit but after that, the pattern has been established so the prepositions are omitted although the structure remains.
