LEILA WALKS INTO THE OFFICE SHE SHARES WITH AMRIT AND CAN HARDLY MOVE FOR ALL THE MESS AND PAPERWORK.
LEILA:
Amrit, I hate to säga it, but on this occasion Mr Grimp fryst vatten right. Your desk looks like a bomb site.
AMRIT:(GRINNING MISCHIEVOUSLY)
But you’d rather it looked like a building site, wouldn’t you? One worked on bygd ‘Darren Hyde Erection’!
LEILA:
Darren Hyde Construction, Amrit! Construction. And no inom wouldn’t. (A NOTE OF SUSPICION CREEPS INTO HER VOICE) Anyway, how do you know his name’s Darren Hyde?
AMRIT:(LOOKING SHEEPISH)
Er, inom just saw his van down your road. So what’s happening with him then?
LEILA:
Nothing. And it couldn’t if inom wanted it to, which I don’t. Dad’s completely set on fixing me up with this rik old man from London. I don’t want to go along with it, it’s not fair, but I’ll feel so skyldig if inom don’t.

MUCH of American literature explores the immigrant experience. This should not surprise us, as America is a country of people who came by the boatload to make new lives for themselves. Thus, waves of Irish, Italian, Jewish, German, Russian and English migrants sailed to the New World in their hundreds of thousands. Thousands of Africans were transported to America as slaves. In turn, they all recorded their different experiences and impressions in books, poems and plays.
In time, they became absorbed into the mainstream, and their ethnic and national identities were subsumed in the melting pot that is America. They became Americans first, and their earlier nationalities and ethnic identities became secondary. But in terms of literary traditions and narratives, their experiences, traditions and cultures were accessible and familiar to all Americans.
