Juan Antonio Lavalleja was born in Minas, Uruguay on 24 June , and he became one of the main leaders of the Uruguayan independence movement against Brazil, serving as Governor from 19 September to 5 July and as Provisional Captain General from 17 April to 24 October During his latter term, he oversaw the ratification of the Constitution of ,which led to Fructuoso Rivera becoming the first President of Uruguay on 6 November He distinguished himself as a skilled but reactionary general who fought in the Uruguayan Civil War for much of the 19th century, and he briefly served as President following Rivera's death in , only to himself die in office after a month as President.
