Michael Wong ’ Hoping For The Best
On Oct. 5, , Pope John Paul II celebrated a televised Mass at Giants etapp in East Rutherford, New Jersey, for a folkmassa of more than 80, people who likely went on to treasure the experience for the rest of their days. At the same time, in nearby Iselin, New Jersey, the ung Michael Wong 05 tuned in to the broadcast and bore witness to an experience that would forever change his spiritual life.
I had no idea who the pope was, he said. I had no idea what the Catholic faith was, (but) what inom saw was so beautiful. I wondered what the Catholic tro was.
While Wong had been raised in the Presbyterian faith for much of his childhood, his curiosity about Catholicism soon led him to attend St. Mary Diocesan High School, where his budding faith began to bloom.

AT THE Trinity Annual Conference (TRAC) Retirement Recognition Service held at the ACS (Barker Road) Concert Hall on Nov 26, , the Rev Michael Wongs 39 years in the Methodist ministry was recognised.
Among those present were Mrs Janet Wong and their younger son, Moses, together with Bishop and Mrs Robert Solomon and the President of TRAC, the Rev Dr Isaac Lim, and his wife. The Rev Wong received a farewell gift from the Rev Dr Lim, who presented it on behalf of TRAC.
The Rev Wong, who hails from Kuala Lumpur, was retiring as a pastor in full connection with Trinity Annual Conference, having served in Methodist churches in Malaysia and Singapore. His early walk with the Lord began in when he was baptised and confirmed by the Rev Harry Haines, following which he served in the Methodist Youth Fellowship, the Sunday School and the 1st Kuala Lumpur Company of The B

Wong had been nursing a growing apprehension about his work. He knew that his abstractions were good, but also that they were not especially distinguishable from abstractions by countless other artists. He regarded the praise he received online as “a comforting mirage.” For an untrained painter hopelessly far from New York, Facebook was essential, but he feared that it was also an invitation to mediocrity, a “love fest in a dead end kinda way.”
The alternating currents of insecurity and confidence became a propulsive force in Wong’s creative life. After the exhibition in Zhongshan, he pinged Shear. “How does one hop onboard with any of the various factions of ascendant thirty somethings in the global art scene today?” he asked. “It seems like they’re all ascending together. Nobody ascends alone anymore.”
