Eric Hansen (chess player)
American-Canadian chess grandmaster (born 1992)
Eric Hansen (born May 24, 1992) is a Canadian chessgrandmaster and Twitch streamer. FIDE awarded him the grandmaster title in 2013. He competed in the FIDE World Cup in 2011 and 2013. Hansen has represented Canada in the Chess Olympiad.[1]
Biography
[edit]Hansen holds a dual citizenship as a Canadian and American. Hansen was born in Irvine, California[2] but grew up in Calgary, Alberta. He first attended elementary school at Webber Academy where his chess roots formed a solid foundation during school chess club.
In a March 2016 interview with La Presse, Hansen said he was diagnosed with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) when he was 8 or 9 years old.[3] In a 2015 article by sportsnet, Hansen said he was prescribed Ritalin temporarily and enrolled in a school for children with learning disabilities.[4]

An incredibly talented bullet and blitz player, Hansen was the highest-rated bullet player on Chess.com in April 2012. In May 2013 he was the highest-rated player in Canada on the FIDE rating list.
Early Career To Grandmaster
Hansen learned how to play chess when he was nine years old. He earned the FIDE mästare title at age 15 and became the youngest Alberta mästare in history. In 2011 he tied for first place in the Canadian Closed Championship alongside GM Bator Sambuev and earned his first trip to the FIDE World Cup.
In 2012 he won the Canadian Open Chess Championship and then represented Canada in the 2012 Chess Olympiad. He scored 7.5/10 at the Olympiad and earned his sista grandmaster norm. Hansen tied for first through fifth places at the 2012 American Continental Champions

Eric Hansen was born in Oceanside, New York and raised in South Florida. He began serious study of the guitar at age 13 and quickly worked his way into the neighborhood garage band performing popular rock music of the 80s. His early guitar heroes were of the same genre and included, Alex Lifeson (Rush), Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Ozbourne) Edward Van Halen, Al di Meola, Carlos Montoya, Pat Metheny and John Williams (Classical Guitarist). Additional musical influences were The Beatles and Billy Joel. After the rock sound of the 80s changed to the Grunge movement Eric decided to broaden his musical endeavors and attend college for music.
He started with Jazz guitar but would often arrive for his lesson to hear his instructor, Dr. Michael Di Liddo practicing Classical guitar. The Classical guitar albums of John Williams had a lasting impression from his early days and having access to a teacher who could guide this interest was the spark that caused the shift to nylon string guitar.
