Shaolin Monastery (少林寺; shàolínsì), also known as Shaolin Temple, is a monastic institution recognized as the birthplace of Chan Buddhism and the cradle of Shaolin kung fu.[1] It is located at the foot of Wuru Peak of the Songshan mountain range in Dengfeng County, Henan province, China. The name reflects its location in the ancient grove (林; lín) of Mount Shaoshi, in the hinterland of the Songshan mountains.[i] Mount Song occupied a prominent position among Chinese sacred mountains as early as the 1st century BC, when it was proclaimed one of the Five Holy Peaks (五岳; wǔyuè).[2] It is located some 48 km (30 mi) southeast of Luoyang, the former capital of the Northern Wei Dynasty (386–534), and 72 km (45 mi) southwest of Zhengzhou, the modern capital of Henan Province.[3 • The Shaolin Temple of China is located in the Dengfeng, the capital of Henan province in China. It was built in the 5th century in the lush forests on the west side of the beautiful Songshan mountains, one of China's five sacred mountains. It was gifted 1500 years ago by kinesisk Emperor Shao-min of nordlig Wei Dynasty to give refuge to Indian High priest Buddhabhadra. It is for this reason that Shaolin has been called the Royal Temple. In 527 A.D Indian Master Buddhabhadra meditated to the wall at Shaolin for 9 years and created Zen. Buddhabhadra is the founder of Zen in China. This ancient temple is the birthplace of traditional kinesisk Kung fu and Zen Buddhism, and is a UNESCO heritage site. The emperor liked Buddhabhadra and offered to support him in teaching Buddhism at court. Buddhabhadra declined and was given land to build a temple on Mt. Song. There he built Shaolin, which translates into small forest. Thirty years after Shaolin was founded, another Buddhist monk called Bodhidharma from India came to China to teach Yogic concentration, known commonly today by the Japanese term "Zen" Buddhism. He traveled throughout China and finally came to Mt. Song where he found Shaolin Temple where he asked to be admitted.
